Coral Springs High School

Coral Springs, FL

1989-1990

I only taught at Coral Springs High School for one year (1989-90), but I really loved teaching there. I followed Mr. Duane Hendon and Mr. Frank McCaskill. The band had 200+ members with established rules and traditions and was already a successful organization. It was my plan to be there for many years but as it turned out, my wife at the time couldn’t get a job in Broward County the following year because of a hiring freeze. I was driving back and forth across the 2 laned Alligator Alley every weekend to see my family and I just couldn't keep doing it year after year.

But what a year it was! The marching band received straight superiors (again), the top concert band and jazz bands received straight superiors at district (again), and for the very first time, the band received the prestigious Otto J. Kraushaar award for straight superior ratings at district marching, concert, and state band festivals. This was accomplished even after changing 2 of the 3 pieces we played between district and state. In addition, we marched halftime for the Miami Dolphins/Jets game at Joe Robbie Stadium(now named Hard Rock Stadium), at Miami’s King Orange Jamboree (aka The Orange Bowl Parade), and were Grand Champions at the 1990 Dixie Classic Festival in Richmond, VA. I have fond memories of the school, students, parents and wonderful people that I met and worked with; a few of them who are captured in this scrapbook that I made at that time. Honestly, I have no idea why I have some of these photos but here they are.
